The fae were waiting to ambush them on the walkway above the factory floor.

“Stop them!” Jasper ordered. He was supporting the fae with the lost limb at the other end of the room.

Frendall dropped his arm from Klara’s, knowing she might need to fight. She kicked over the cauldron closest to the factory wall and prayed it would lead them out into the open. The fae filed down the walkway, preparing to surround them, but the corrupted magic ate clean through the brick in seconds. Frendall glanced back at the destruction with a hint of respect.

The smog-coated air choked them as they ran past the worn-down cottages. Creatures in various stages of recuperation stood in the street or peered from windows.

“Any idea how we’re going to get through the protection?” Frendall shouted as they neared the glamour separating them from the silver wood. Chaos unfolded around them as the creatures watched them escape and tried to stop the fae. Klara was grateful to have some cover from the flying spears landing on either side of them. The thunder of boots behind them spurred them along.

“I’m working on it,” she shouted.

An explosion roared behind them. They stopped, and so did the fae. Both sides watched black and red flames shooting from the chimneys before striking the protections above them.

“We’ve got to move—it’ll give us a chance,” Klara urged.

The glass-like protections cracked and fractured as bright white flashes fought the flames. The fae chasing them had stopped to stare at the extraordinary display. Abadan’s flames began to dissipate, and Klara pushed her legs and Frendall harder as the protection started to rebuild. The silver wood shone on the other side of the protections, beckoning them, and the pair dived through just in time. The glamour sealed itself behind them.

“What the hell was that? Did you do that?” Frendall gasped as they lay on the ground.

“I couldn’t have even if I wanted to. It was Abadan,” Klara said beside him. “She’s the only one who could have conjured that much magic.”

“Aemella will make her pay for that,” Frendall said, struggling to his feet. “But better she thinks it’s an escape attempt than that her daughter is sneaking around.”

“Abadan is on our side for now, but she wants her freedom in return,” Klara explained, dusting herself off.

“What aren’t you telling me?” Frendall brushed back her hair to reveal where Jasper had struck her with the bottle. The wound had healed, but the blood remained. She gently pushed his hand away.

“Jasper was leading the patrol. I couldn’t sense him. I think I was too distracted holding our glamours. He struck me before I had a chance to overpower him.” She sighed, disappointed in herself.

“I’ll take great pleasure in tearing off his wings,” Frendall said. They watched the protections strengthen and shine before disappearing behind them, and all that appeared in front of them was the silver wood.

“And I might help you do it, but they’ll have subdued Abadan by now, and then they’ll remember us,” Klara said.
